Mark Thomas Talks About “What’s Up?”
If you’ve paid attention to DisasterTheory’s social media, you have undoubtedly discovered that they are officially releasing a single “What’s Up?”
So, to quote the song, “what’s going on” with this? What made DisasterTheory choose a song by Linda Perry and 4 Non Blondes?
DisasterTheory vocalist, Mark Thomas, says “If you look around you today, you’ll see a world and society in complete chaos. Our country is busting at the seems with differences of opinions. It doesn’t matter which side you’re on. It doesn’t matter which opinion you agree with or disagree with. What matters are the topics the opinions are based on and the division it causes. We live in a world where we have a historical impeachment process happening and people have chosen sides. They’ve chosen to hate one another, become violent toward one another and belittle one another rather than come together.
we have political problems, freedom problems, social media problems, racial problems, gender problems, but more importantly we have societal problems that we can’t agree to fix or how to fix them. When someone, who thinks of the bigger picture, looks around them at all of this it becomes hard not to ask the question ‘what’s going on?’ What the hell is happening? How do we fix this? If you find yourself looking at our world and not asking these questions about our current social environment on a global scale, it’s likely that you’re not thinking clearly or that you are distracted by the mess that it’s all become.”
So how did the song choice happen?
Thomas says “It became an obvious choice. When trying to personify our current social environment into a song, it became pretty clear that this perfect song already existed. A song released almost 2 decades ago blatantly outlines the very same feelings we face today. If you really pay attention to that statement alone, it tells you that not much has changed in our world. Some of the topics have changed. Some of the issues have changed but aside from that, not much has really changed except our perception of the issues. So we chose the song in the hopes that we are able to send a message to people all over the world. The message is simple; “no matter which side of the fence you stand on, the person you are aggressive toward is your neighbor. They are human just like you. They have opinions just like you. You don’t have to agree with one another to show love and respect to one another. Wake up and ask yourself ‘what’s going on?’ Wake up and ask yourself ‘how do I become part of the solution instead of adding to the problem?”
The single is set to be released on all major platforms on Friday, December 13th, 2019
